Where is your energy going?
Have you ever looked up from your phone and realized an hour had vanished? You didn’t choose to spend it that way. It just went. That quiet theft happens more than most of us want to admit. The news unconsciously draws us in. Work hollows us out. Even the people we love can leave us feeling drained. Before long, we are running on empty and we are not entirely sure what happened.
Our focus is often given away so cheaply. Instead of taking control I’ve found myself reacting, getting angry, or just going with the flow. If that weren’t enough there’s the constant trap of gossip. Talking about every conceivable individual. Debating over politicians and sharing the worst of those in our lives. Not all is negative, we lose ourselves in sports, in other forms of entertainment like movies or television. Why do we do this?
Maybe there are better questions. Who are we becoming in all these situations? What type of person do we want to be? I’m asking myself these questions more and more. I don’t like that almost everything in life tries to keep me from my best. I believe there is something beautiful that is lost when we ignore these questions.
Imagine how things could be different. Once we become aware we have the ability to change our direction. We don’t have to stay in a loop that steals rather than nourishes. We don’t have to live a life of reaction and focusing on everything that sucks the life from us. When I realized that my energy doesn’t need to be stolen or given away reluctantly something shifted within me.
I have come to realize that I can control who or what receives my energy. Being intentional is like plugging back into the source of what matters. Life begins to feel like I don’t have to be at the mercy of those around me and be unwittingly drawn into the chaos. There really is only one question left to ask. Where is your energy going?
