FOOTHOLDS AND STRONGHOLDS
Not all battles are loud or visible, some begin subtly, in thoughts we entertain, attitudes we excuse, or choices we delay addressing. Scripture teaches that the enemy doesn’t always barge in; he looks for a crack, a foothold. Left unchecked, these footholds can grow into strongholds. Strongholds are deep-rooted patterns of sin, lies, or resistance to God.
This study explores the difference between footholds and strongholds, how they take shape in our lives, and how we can break free through truth, repentance, and the power of Christ.
WHAT ARE FOOTHOLDS
A foothold is a small opening or opportunity for sin or the devil to gain influence.
Ephesians 4:26-27
“Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil.”
James 1:14-15
“But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire, when it has conceived, gives birth to sin, and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.”
John 10:10
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”
What are some “small compromises” in your life that might be giving the enemy room to work?
How do unresolved emotions like anger or envy create spiritual vulnerability?
Are there thought patterns or behaviours you’ve dismissed that might actually be footholds?
HOW FOOTHOLDS FORM
Footholds occur when unresolved sin, pride, or disobedience provides the devil with an opportunity to influence us.
Genesis 4:7
“If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”
Romans 6:16-17
“Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.”
Proverbs 16:18
“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”
1 John 4:1
“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
What common attitudes or habits in your life could be opening doors to sin?
Have you noticed areas where pride or stubbornness keeps you from turning to God?
How can you better “test the spirits” and discern what is influencing your thoughts and decisions?
WHAT ARE STRONGHOLDS
Strongholds are entrenched patterns of sin, lies, or resistance to God.
2 Corinthians 10:3-5
“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
Isaiah 30:1-2
“‘Woe to the obstinate children,’ declares the Lord, ‘to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin.’”
Psalm 18:2
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.”
Are there persistent struggles in your life that feel hard to break free from?
What lies or arguments have taken root in your thinking?
Where do you tend to turn for protection or escape instead of God?
HOW STRONGHOLDS FORM
Strongholds arise when footholds grow into entrenched patterns through persistent sin, deception, or rebellion against God.
Hebrews 3:12-13
“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.”
Romans 1:21-22
“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools.”
Can you identify any strongholds that started with a “small foothold” in your past?
How does ongoing sin or bitterness harden your heart over time?
Who do you have in your life to lovingly exhort and speak truth to you regularly?
OVERCOMING FOOTHOLDS AND STRONGHOLDS
Overcoming footholds and strongholds requires vigilance, spiritual warfare, truth, repentance, and dependence on God’s power.
James 4:7
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
1 Peter 5:8-9
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.”
Ephesians 6:11-12
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness.”
John 8:31-32
“If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Romans 12:1-2
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Colossians 1:13-14
“He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
Proverbs 4:23
“Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”
