Consider the soul

Consider how precious a soul must be, when both God and the devil are after it. – Charles Spurgeon

What a powerful quote! This made me stop and ponder. How do you even put a price on a soul? The Bible consistently portrays the soul as the totality of a person, created by God and meant for eternal existence in relationship with Him.

Isn’t this truly amazing that God cares about our total being? Psalm 139: 14 says, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.”

Jesus emphasized the importance of our soul in Mark 8:36 He says, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?”. Isn’t this so true, we spend so much time and energy chasing after things that will perish or instant gratification but sadly so often neglect to think about eternity.

This takes me back to the quote, God and the devil are both in it for the long term. Why do I tend to focus on the short term? It’s a question that hits close to home. Life’s demands can so easily cloud our vision. So how can the soul become a priority for us too?

I think we need to pursue the heart of God and see ourselves and others as He does. That’s quite the challenge. It’s humbling to think that God cares so much for me that He’s willing to fight for me. What if we cared for other people’s souls the way God cares for ours? I think that’s the challenge, to start seeing others as precious too. Let’s consider the soul and not just our own, but also the souls of those around us, for each one is worth fighting for.
