TOGETHER WE PREVAIL: THE POWER OF UPHOLDING EACH OTHER
There are seasons when our strength runs low and we realize we were never meant to stand alone. God designed His people to walk together. This study explores the power of shared strength, humble cooperation, and the quiet beauty of holding one another up. When we stand together, we discover that victory belongs not to the strongest individual, but to the united people of God.
PREVAILING TOGETHER
A story where faith, perseverance, and shared strength lead to victory through God’s power.
Exodus 17:8–13
Then Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, “Choose for us men, and go out and fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand”. So Joshua did as Moses told him, and fought with Amalek, while Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. Whenever Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hand, Amalek prevailed. But Moses’ hands grew weary, so they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other, so that his hands remained steady until the sun went down. So Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the sword.
When have you seen God use others to “hold up your hands” during a weary season?
What practical ways can you help someone who is currently fighting a “battle”?
SUPPORTING EACH OTHER
When Moses’ strength began to fade, Aaron and Hur stood beside him, lifting his hands so the battle could continue below. In the same way, we are called to stand beside one another by strengthening the weary, encouraging the faithful, and reminding each other that we do not fight alone.
Ecclesiastes 4:9–10
“Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!”
Galatians 6:2
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 5:11
“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.”
Romans 15:1–2
“We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up.”
Hebrews 10:24–25
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”
Philippians 2:3–4
“Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Proverbs 27:17
“Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another.”
John 13:34–35
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Are you taking the obligation God has called you to have for others seriously?
How can you create a culture of mutual encouragement within your circle, church, or family?
GOD’S POWER REVEALED IN COOPERATION
Moses interceded from the hilltop, Aaron and Hur upheld him, and Joshua led the warriors in the valley. Each fulfilled a unique role, yet all were united by one purpose and one God. True strength is revealed when every believer contributes their part, and together God’s power is made visible.
1 Corinthians 12:4–7
“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.”
Ephesians 4:11–16
“And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
Philippians 1:27
“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.”
Romans 12:3–8
“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.”
2 Corinthians 1:8–9
“For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead.”
Matthew 18:19–20
“Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”
Colossians 3:14–15
“And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.”
Have you considered what role you play in the body of Christ?
How does unity among believers display the character and power of God?
BEHIND THE SCENES
While Joshua and the soldiers fought on the battlefield, Aaron and Hur quietly laboured behind the scenes to sustain Moses. Their unseen obedience and steadfast faith played an essential role in the victory. God often works through hidden acts of faithfulness that few notice but ones He honours.
Ephesians 6:12
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
Daniel 10:12–13
“Then he said to me, ‘Fear not, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart to understand and humbled yourself before your God, your words have been heard, and I have come because of your words. The prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me twenty-one days, but Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I was left there with the kings of Persia.’”
2 Kings 6:16–17
“He said, ‘Do not be afraid, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ Then Elisha prayed and said, ‘O Lord, please open his eyes that he may see.’ So the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw, and behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”
Luke 22:31–32
“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.”
Romans 8:26–28
“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
Colossians 4:12
“Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ Jesus, greets you, always struggling on your behalf in his prayers, that you may stand mature and fully assured in all the will of God.”
2 Corinthians 4:17–18
“For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
James 5:16
“Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.”
Who can you fight for behind the scenes through prayer?
How can we stay steadfast in unseen ministry when recognition or results are slow to appear?
THE COST & BLESSING OF SUPPORT
Moses’ arms grew heavy, Aaron and Hur stood firm beside him, and Joshua’s army fought tirelessly until the sun went down. Each gave of themselves through strength, time, endurance and together they shared in the blessing of victory. Supporting others often requires sacrifice, but it also brings the deep joy of shared triumph in God’s purpose.
Mark 10:43–45
“But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Galatians 6:9–10
“And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
Philippians 2:17–18
“Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. Likewise you also should be glad and rejoice with me.”
2 Timothy 4:6–8
“For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”
John 15:12–13
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.”
Matthew 25:37–40
“Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’”
1 Peter 4:10–11
“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
Hebrews 6:10
“For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.”
Reflect on a time when supporting someone else brought unexpected joy or spiritual growth to your own life and what was the blessing you received?
Where do you see yourself in your story – as Moses, weary and needing help; as Aaron and Hur, called to hold someone else’s hands; or as Joshua, faithfully fighting on the battlefield?
